As we discussed in the Princess complex, women still adhere to a double standard, especially when it benefits them. The same women who are vehement in supporting the idea of equal pay for equal work still expect tokens of affection from men, not terribly different from the days when men gave women presents as disguised payment for sexual favors.
During the dating period, modern women still expect the man to bear the great majority of the costs of dining out, travel, and entertainment; the huge engagement ring is the seal of the deal to move to the next stage of the relationship; the birth jewelry is next, or perhaps the sports car and clothing. And how much of this is reciprocated?
Women need to decide – do they want to be equal partners in adult relationships, or do they want to be courted with gifts – and yes, the two ideas are mutually exclusive.
