MLK Day is good in concept but bad in naming. MLK was a good leader who continued something which had been in the making for a long time; that is, freedom and equality. And there were those who carried on the fight after his death. There should not be one holiday named after one man. Even Columbus Day should be renamed. Perhaps MLK Day would be better named as Freedom Day or Equlity Day, not just a day that represents one race and one man.

Interesting. Speaking as a person who was quota'd back into the military in 1971 after filling an "emergency employment act" job in the Milwaukee Police Department Detective Clerical, I have some very strong feelings about all this. I respect the things that MLK said he stood for... judge a man by the content of his character not the color of his skin. I was brought up to do just that. I have found that very seldom, either back in 1971 at the Milwaukee P.D., or later in the military, was I judged by the content of my character. Quite often that all was sacrificed on the alter of political correctness. If anyone really believes that what MLK preached is what is happening, they are quite uninformed, or are just plain disingenuous. The blacks today seem to think that they are owed something by people who never did them harm, and that they, and their race are much better than all the other races, particularly the white one. I don't understand that, but I have seen black parents teaching that very thing to their children. The MLK holiday seems to be just another extension of that teaching. The man was not a hero to an entire nation. I'm sorry. I did not enjoy affirmative action as practiced against me and I don't understand how that makes the man a hero. When that sort of thing was done for whites and against blacks, it was properly referred to as racism and bigotry. Now that it is being practiced by the blacks against all and sundry, it is racial unity and a real good thing. Go figure.

I am proud that you have the guts to tell the truth about Martin Luther King. He reeked of so much moral hipocrisy he would make Clinton look like saintly in comparison. True story: in 1964 at a hotel in oslo Norway a maid was being chased around by a naked black man. The maid caught him in bed with another man and he was afraid it might ruin his chances of winning the nobel peace prize. It was "Dr."King. He also had ties to the Communist party coming out the kazoo.

King was without doubt one of the greatest men of this century. His dreams were of a society where people were judged by who and what they were..not the colour of their skin.He fought against ignorance and bigotry..against the beliefe that some lives were disposable whilst others were not...his death at the hands of an assassin was a tragedy in every sense of the word..but his voice was not silenced, his works never forgotten, his legacy remains forever.
Martin Luther King Day should be one of reflection..of searching the conscience..his voice took the entrenched hatred and ignorance of a nation..and declared what we are now only just beginning to realise..that we are ONE PEOPLE..ONE RACE..ONE WORLD...human.
I will remember him.,with honour,and with respect.

I belive that Nlk did alot for the blackman in the united states and the whole world for that matter. We as a nation should try and come together black white red and yellow, for we all know that this great nation is going down hill fast. We need to put the prayer back in school along with the National Anthem and tell those who dont wish to be involved to please sit quitely while we have a chance to say our peice before the c.l.u. jumps down are throats, saying that it is wrong for the people who have a dream, and those who belive in god "everone" that its not aloud. This nation has come along way, lets finish the job.

Blacks make me sick in thinking MLK was murdered.
He could do no more alive because the world was
beginning to see him as he was...a Pedophile (12 yr olds)
a communist and a instigator of racial riots. YET they say
he was "non-violent"...HOGWASH...white people are not
as stupid as you think. The hate that young blacks, who have
had nothing but the best of this society and spit in our faces,
are going to cause BAD times for this country. And, do you

Blacks don't have "roots" so they invent them. They will NEVER admit that
their OWN people sold them to slave traders. NO BLACK WAS run down
and captured and brought to this country. I wish the SOB's that brought them
over here are rotting in HELL! Why don't blacks that worship everything African
go BACK!!! Or at least help their own over there. No, they don't want to go back
they want to turn this country into another South Africa and let this country die
like So. Africa is doung....now I've said it! God help this country..PLEASE!!!

I believe that you have misinterpreted the meaning of MLK day.
He is not a legend because of his early death he is a legend because
of his works and calls for peace in the face of conflict and
his work for equality in a time dangerous to do so as was seen by his
when he was assassinated. He is not a great man because he died young he
is a great man because he did great things.

I have never understood MLK day. I find it to be more of
a "Pacification Day" In 1960 I was a young lad stationed
in Biloxi Miss.. I recall a day when MLK and his group were
going to take over the white beaches. I remember some of
the other people I was stationed with getting ripped open
by bicycle chains. We weren't part of the politics of the
area or anything. A lot of people were hurt that day. Ever
since that time, when I heard how non-violent Martin Luther King
was I never believed his claim for peace or the political rhetoric
that followed him after that.

It is a truly a shame that there is so much obvious hate toward MLK. The focus needs to be on his message not on him. It's not like the man asked for a holiday you know. His dream was simple he wanted racial equality for all races based on their character NOT their skin color. The demise of our country has been all the focus and on this so-called "political correctness". Our country should disband this affirmative action b****it and hire the canidate most intellectually qualified for the job not keep a company culturally balanced. Is life culturally balanced? what kind of government crap is that anyway? Remember the consitution: "....that all men are created equal and are endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights and that among these are life liberty and the pursuit of happiness" Forget this promotion of the races let us all strive for our own personal betterment and the jobs for those who are truly qualified!

Well! It is nice to know that SOME people still have a spine in America today. Most people refuse to learn ANYTHING about the REAL MLK. He was a known communist, whore-monger and plagiarist, and the night before he was killed, he had sex with two women (hookers?) and raped a third in his hotel room. And this 'non-violent' bullcrap... the marchers OFTEN rioted and looted stores, where were the cameras then? (WATTS section, in Calif, 1964) Stormfront.org has a nice expose' on MLK, I suggest reading the book "The Beast as Saint".
This holiday MUST be stopped!
I remember in gradeschool in 1980, the cult-like worship of him; being in a nearly all-black school, it was like a mental plague had infected us all... like EVERY class subject was centered around this for all of January, then came February--'black history month', it happened all over again! What a load of crap! No wonder Milwaukee Public Schools have grades and test scores 40% lower than the national average! See it yourself! (www.jsonline.com) Too bad MLK was killed, he would have made a fool of himself eventually, because he did not have even ONE answer to any of these issues.

I'm sick and tired of the "political correctness" that says you cannot say anything against a minority without being a racist.
Let me ask you this, what kind of outrage do you think there would be if there was a "Miss White America" contest? Plenty! Yet, there is a Miss Black America contest - and that's not racist?
What kind of outrage do you think there would be if there was a "United White College Fund?" Plenty! Yet there is a "United Negro College Fund." - and that's not racist?
Pro sports has quotas on hiring minorities - yet look at the NBA and the NFL. Do you ever hear any outrage against why there are not more whites? Maybe we should set some quotas or something (read the obvious sarcasm.)
The list goes on.
Who's racist? I certainly am not - some of my best friends are minorities, but no one seems to have the balls to call things as they are.
So here we are, honoring the life of one man who was special because of the color of his skin. Ever read his rhetoric? He may have preached peace, but he knew damn well that his words would ignite violence and hatred. No? Just look at the world today. Anyone who thinks there has been (or ever will be) progress in regards to race relations is seriously deluded.
I dream of a day with no quotas - where the best qualified for the job GETS the job and KEEPS the job.
I dream of a day where minorities wake up and realize what the word "minority" really means: it means you are in the MINORITY....if you represent 14% of the population don't go demanding 50% of the jobs. OK...demand it if you want, but don't expect it.
And if you don't like being a minority, then move back to your native country where you can enjoy all the "majority" benefits.
I wouldn't move to China and expect to be on an even keel with the rest of the people. I'd be in the minority and realize it and deal with it - or I'd move somewhere else.
I expect some of the bleeding heart liberals to respond in usual fashion to this letter - you know - the kind that have had their heads rammed so far up their backsides by "political correctness" it makes you want to puke.
This country is full of stupid people. Clinton becoming president proves it. Anyone who can't see through that piece of garbage ten miles aways is blind. He is without a doubt the worst, most disgraceful president we've ever had in the history of this country.
Some example. Any ordinary citizen who lied to a grand jury numerous times would not have to worry about losing their job - because they would be in jail. He's lucky he's only being considered to be removed from office. By all rights he should be in jail.
Enough rambling. You liberals boil my blood every time you open your mouths - I hope I've got yours boiling for a change. so you can take your Martin Luther King day and "shove it where the sun don't shine."
And if you don't like the tone of my letter maybe you should look again at the title of this section:

" We Have A Dream"
Well done....well done!
I want to believe that in the heart of most Americans, lay a small seed of desire & drive....the potential to be the people we want to be,....to make America truely Great! And I DO see this every day, in one individual at a time....but something happens to the individual goodness when we become a collective. Yes, we ralley during times of war (if it's popular), are country comes to a standstill when a small child falls down a well...But we also watched entire neighborhoods being burned,...people savagely beaten, looting on an unprecidented scale.....and why.....black rage? I doubt it!
I was in Washington & heard Dr. King speak. He spoke of honor, & dignity, he encouraged self respect, & respect for others...not retaliation & destruction!
Celebrating the life of Dr. King is appropriate. We have always had are white heros....right or wrong. The black children need to know that people who look like them can be heros as well.
However,I feel the MLK holiday should be expanded & possibly renamed, to enclude the countless people, black & white who fought for civil rights. The hundreds who marched,...many of whom were beaten, many who died....to secure the most basic of human rights....freedom!
In Mississippi I saw black courage...black dignity...even black anger,...never once did I see the shamful destruction of black rage.
